Specialist #1 referred patient to specialist #2 for a broken tooth. Oral evaluation and x-rays were taken. Tooth was extracted at the same appointment. A separate charge from the tooth extraction fee, a consultation fee of $99.was charged. That second charge was denied by insurance. Is that not the correct code? Thanks!

9310 is the correct code. Consultations (D9310) and exams often share the same frequency, by any chance was the D9310 denied due to frequency for exams had been met? Also, many dental plans will consider the exam inclusive of any other treatment performed that day and it might have been denied due to payment processing guidelines.

Code D0140 should be used as an emergency visit if this was the case. D9310 is a consultation code used by specialists and is generally not utilized when treatment is rendered. Exam codes and consultation codes are not generally billed together.

D9310 - Consult only no treatment rendered.
